Ambona (1616-1617)
Warsztat gdański, Isaak van den Block – obrazy, drewno dębowe, sosnowe rzeźbione i polichromowane, wym.: wys. całości ok. 740 cm.
Zabytek pochodzi z kościoła pw. św. Jana w Gdańsku. W 1944 roku został zdemontowany i wywieziony z świątyni. Po wojnie był przechowywany w składnicy konserwatorskiej, skąd w 1966 roku przekazano go do kościoła Mariackiego.
Ambonę ufundował Zarząd kościoła św. Jana. Została rozbudowana w 1676 roku. Zabytek składa się z kolumny, korpusu, balustrady i baldachimu. Korpus zdobią cztery obrazy, ze scenami z Starego Testamentu: Nawrócenie mieszkańców Niniwy, Kazanie Ezdrasza, Powtórne odnalezienie Księgi Prawa i Budowa arki Noego. Napisy pod obrazami nawiązują do ich tematyki. Na balustradzie natomiast umieszczono obrazy ze scenami z Nowego Testamentu. Patrząc kolejno od góry w stronę bramki widzimy: Cudowny połów ryb, czyli powołanie apostołów Piotra i Andrzeja, Chrystusa nauczającego na łodzi, Chrystusa z faryzeuszami, Przypowieść o Dobrym Pasterzu, kazanie św. Pawła oraz Cud w Troadzie. Na froncie bramki widoczny jest obraz przedstawiający Chrystusa jako dobrego Pasterza. Od strony wewnętrznej namalowano Śmierć Nadaba i Abihu, synów Aarona. Portal jest zwieńczony rzeźbami Chrystusa oraz Wiary (z księgą i kielichem) i Nadziei (z kotwicą). W belkowaniu znajduje się napis „Ich bin die Tür zu den schaffen. So iemad durch mich eingehet, der wird Selig werden. Jon. X”, który w języku polskim brzmi: „Ja jestem bramą. Jeżeli ktoś wejdzie przeze Mnie, będzie zbawiony […]” (J 10,9).
Ośmioboczny baldachim został dobudowany w 1676 roku. Nad nim znajduje się latarnia wewnątrz, której umieszczona została figura św. Jana Chrzciciela. Latarnia jest zwieńczona niską kopułą, na której szczycie znajduje się feniks w płomieniach. Poniżej latarni na narożach baldachimu zostały umieszczone personifikacje cnót. Figury od lewej to: Wiara (trzymająca krzyż i księgę), Mądrość (trzymająca rylec i tabliczkę, z psem u stóp), Radość (z lutnią w rękach i jeleniem u stóp), Pobożność (postać ze złożonymi dłońmi, bez atrybutów), Pokój (z otwartą księgą i opuszczoną prawą ręką, w której brak gałązki oliwnej) oraz Miłość (z dzieckiem na lewej ręce i płonącym sercem w prawej). Oba poziomy zdobią jeszcze płyciny z owalnymi emblematami przedstawiającymi serce.

The monument comes from the church of St. John in Gdańsk. In 1944, it was disassembled and taken away from the temple. After the war, it was stored in the conservation repository, from where it was transferred to St. Mary’s church in 1966.
The pulpit was founded by the Board of St. John’s church. It was expanded in 1676. It consists of a column, corpus, balustrade and canopy. The corpus is decorated with four paintings, with scenes from the Old Testament: Conversion of the Ninevehs, Ezra’s Sermon, The Second Finding of the Book of the Law, and Building Noah’s Ark. The inscriptions under the paintings refer to their subject matter. On the balustrade there are paintings with scenes from the New Testament. Looking successively from the top towards the gate, we can see: The miraculous catch of fish, i.e. the calling of the apostles Peter and Andrew, Christ’s teaching on a boat, Christ with the Pharisees, Parable on the Good Shepherd, the sermon of St. Paul and the Miracle in Troas. There is a picture of Christ as the Good Shepherd on the front of the gate. On the inside, the Death of Nadab and Abihu, sons of Aaron, is painted. The portal is topped with sculptures of Christ and the Faith (with the book and chalice) and Hope (with an anchor). On the entablature there is an inscription “Ich bin die Tür zu den schaffen. So iemad durch mich eingehet, der wird Selig werden. Ion. X “, which means: “I am the gate. If anyone enters through me, he will be saved… ”(Jn 10:9).
The octagonal canopy was added in 1676. Above, there is a lantern with a figure of St. John the Baptist inside. The lantern is topped with a low dome on top of which there is a phoenix in flames. Below the lantern, at the corners of the canopy, personifications of virtues are placed. The figures from the left are: Faith (holding a cross and a book), Wisdom (holding a stylus and a tablet, with a dog at her feet), Joy (with a lute in her hands and a deer at her feet), Piety (a character with folded hands, no attributes), Peace (with an open book and a lowered right hand in which olive branch is missing) and Love (with a child in the left hand and a burning heart in the right). Both levels are decorated with panels with oval emblems depicting a heart.
